Dirk Denison Ten Houses Published

Dirk Denison Architects is pleased to announce the publication of Dirk Denison Ten Houses.

A must-read for anybody curious about the myriad elements that inform custom residential design at the highest level, this new book takes readers into ten extraordinary private homes designed by one of the nation’s top architects, the Chicago-based Dirk Denison of Dirk Denison Architects.

Suites of photographs, plans and drawings of very different homes, selected from Denison’s larger body of residential, civic and commercial work, document the architect’s mastery of a wide range of modernist vocabularies and intents. His intense collaborations with his clients are described in the book’s centerpiece, an interview conducted by the writer Fred A. Bernstein. Here, Denison reflects on his childhood in the ascendant Detroit of mid-century; early encounters with Mies, Saarinen and Yamasaki; Cranbrook; and later studies at the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) and the Harvard Graduate School of Design (GSD). The result is a fascinating portrait of the architect both as a young man and as a successful practitioner, with clients throughout the midwestern United States and on both coasts.

The conversation between Denison and Bernstein also offers something else: a look into the purposeful, rigorous, joyful, and sometimes messy process that is usually concealed behind the glossy color image.
